The canal on foot

Walking along the Hjälmare Canal is a fantastic way to experience both history and nature up close. There are trails suitable for both longer tours and shorter walks, making it easy to choose a route that suits your conditions, time and interest. Here are some of the most popular trails.

Säterboleden (12 km)

Säterboleden is a beautiful hiking trail outside Arboga, starting and ending at the popular visitor center Hjälmare dock. At Hjälmare dock you will find parking, parking spaces for motorhomes, WC, shower and the summer open Hjälmare Canal Café where you can enjoy Belgian food and dessert waffles, shrimp sandwiches, coffee bread and locally produced ice cream. If you don't want to walk the whole route, there are two options to choose from:

  • Östra slingan (4,4 km):
Goes through a beautiful forest area and leads to Finnhäll, Arboga municipality's highest point at 92 meters above sea level. Here you can enjoy the silence of the forest and beautiful views.

  • Western loop (7.7 km):
Takes you through a historic cultural landscape and on to Säterbo church from the 12th century. This loop offers both nature experiences and cultural history.

For those who just want to go for a shorter walk, there is also the Little Canal Loop, which is just under two kilometers long. It starts at Hjälmare dock and passes Kvarnsjön before following part of the old Hjälmare canal from the 17th century.
