Birdwatching on the banks of Lake Hjälmar

The shores of Lake Hjälmaren are one of Sweden's most exciting places for birdwatching, thanks to the rich variety of bird species and the unique combination of wetlands, coastal meadows and archipelago nature. The area is particularly well known for its bird sanctuaries, where both breeding and migrating birds thrive.

 Key areas for birdwatching:

  • Oset and Rynningeviken: Located near Örebro on the western shore of Hjälmaren, these areas are known to attract wading birds, birds of prey and ducks. There are trails and bird towers that make it easy to get close to nature without disturbing it.

  • Kvismaren: Just south of Hjälmaren is Kvismaren, a wetland particularly famous for cranes, geese and whooper swans. During spring and fall, the area is filled with thousands of migratory birds resting here.

  • Northern Hjälmaren: Here you will find shore meadows and shallow bays that attract seabirds, including rare species such as bearded tits and brown harriers.

What bird species can you see?

On the shores of Lake Hjälmaren, you can see everything from common species such as mallards, coots and black-headed gulls to rarer species such as black-necked grebes, bitterns and kingfishers. During spring and fall, the area is particularly popular thanks to the migratory birds, while summer offers a rich bird life in the nesting areas.

Practical tips for birdwatching:

  • Bring binoculars and a bird book to help identify species.

  • Early mornings are often the best time to see and hear birds.

  • Visit bird towers and marked trails for the best experience without disturbing birdlife.
