Kayaking along the canal

Paddling is both a fantastic way to get close to nature, and a great form of exercise. Hjälmare Canal offers great paddling with several shelters and barbecue areas along the canal - perfect for a break during a longer trip.

For those who want to avoid carrying the canoe past locks, it is recommended to start at Kvarnsjön, where it is also possible to rent a canoe. From here you can paddle ten kilometers without locks south to Hjälmarens inlet. On the way, you will also pass the spectacular Bergskanalen, named after the mountain men from Skinnskatteberg who in 1637 paved the way for the water through the mountain.

Things to consider when canoeing

  • Always wear a life jacket.

  • When crossing lakes - paddle after the lee shore.

  • In the fall and spring, the water is cold, so it's good to be close to land if something happens.

  • If the canoe overturns - don't leave it - it will float.

  • Never let go of the paddle. You use it as a balance in difficult situations.

  • Bring a spare paddle for long trips.

  • A properly packed canoe should lie horizontally in the water. Different body weights of the paddlers may mean that the loading needs to be adjusted. A front or rear heavy canoe is difficult to paddle.

  • Never overload the canoe.
